On 1 January 1999, the euro currency was officially introduced after a decade of preparations; for the first three years, it was treated as 'invisible,' with its use limited to accounting and electronic payments. In twelve European Union countries, the largest cash changeover in history occurred on January 1, 2002, when coins and banknotes were first introduced.

The first Swiss Franc was introduced in 1850, and it was equal in value to the French Franc at the time. As of 1865, Switzerland was a member of the Latin Monetary Union, which was comprised of the countries of France, Italy, Switzerland, and Belgium. In 2008, the Swiss Franc was worth more than the United States dollar. The 9th series of Francs was introduced in the year 2010.
